DICK'S SPORTING GOODS TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS IN FLORIDA: What an incredible couple of days in Florida! We came out of the blocks and won MD, then faced a tough Canadian team (6 Nations), and wow was that a slug fest. To say they were aggressive is an understatement...they were on the brutal (not too clean of play) side. We had two fist fights in that game it was so highly charged, and a "stick check" by the refs who threw out one of their sticks (first time i've actually seen a stick check in a tournament). Anyway, they did get in our heads on that game and we lost it 8 to 5.

That game was a rallying point for the team though, we faced opposition unlike anything we had seen, and the boys learned from it. Overall, we went 3 and 2 for the tournament and had redemption in our last game as we played 6 Nations again. In our second meeting with them we came out and turned the tables immediately and were more physical and aggressive (clean though) than ever...6 Nations couldn't get anything going and the only scores they made were on fast breaks (which they were good at by the way)...but we beat them 8 to 5!

We also had Michigan (D1) specifically come to our game with a list of 5 players he wanted to watch...this is HUGE! At a roundtable the night before the game, Coach Mannix asked the panel of D1 Coaches that were on stage...what does Utah, which has some of the best talent on the west coast need to do to get on the D1, D2, D3 radar? The answer was surprising and came from all of the coaches and specifically Yale and Michigan...they all said that last year they ALL started looking West and taking notice of how great the players are. They are now actively looking at players and attend the specific tournaments the Utah Starz attends!! In fact, they gave us a specific list of what needs to be done to further get on their radar...but...they are now actively seeking out western talent because the competition for Eastern talent has become so fierce now that there are so many new D2 and D3 schools in the mix (some new D1's too). They started mentioning Western players that play for them and others and who are all top scorers and all Americans (including a top scorer from Seattle), and they not only want the Western States players reccomendations, they need them. The Next day...Judd Latimore, Michigan (D1) Head Coach...was at our game watching our Utah Starz boys! This obviously DOES NOT mean that all of our boys will be going D1, D2, or D3...especially when many want to go to many of the fantastic MCLA schools...what it does mean is that the Eastern schools are FINALLY "starting" to look West...and it's been a long haul to get us here and a mission the Utah Starz started a very long time ago. It was also stated that..."The Utah Starz is known across the country now", we heard this when a couple coaches asked our players where they were from.

So...We at the Utah Starz are committed to getting our players seen, especially by the colleges the individual Utah Starz Player wants to go to (MCLA, D1, D2, D3, etc.). Just let us know where you want to go...and we will do everything we can to help you get seen and promoted, including reccomendations, phone calls and more. We've had several College Coaches request reccomendation letters from the Utah Starz...ASU, Chapman, SDU and more, and we talk to coaches all the time now who are looking for players and want to know who we have that will be attending the next tournament they will be attending.

NEW UTAH STARZ 2012 UNIFORM UNVEILED:

OUR VERY OWN COACH DAN MANNIX HAS BEEN SELECTED TO BE ONE OF THE HIGH ROLLERS COACHES IN SAN DIEGO: This is a great honor for Coach Mannix and for the Utah Starz program to have one of our coaches selected. As a Certified Level 2 Coach...Coach Mannix has the cred and we are extremely proud of him...please join me in congratulating Coach Mannix! Go Starz...and Go Coach Mannix!

ARIZONA SIZZLER: We took two teams to the Adrenaline Arizona Sizzler tournament this last weekend. Our HS team went into the playoffs as a 3rd seed after defeating RC and tieing AZ Burn, and our MS team went into the playoffs as a 4th seed after their first day. All in all a very successful first day for two teams that had a lot of mewer young players. The HS team got knocked out of the playoffs by AZ Burn, and picked up one more win before heading home 3 - 1- 1...fantastic job boys. Our MS team won their playoff game and went into the semi-finals where they met RC for the second time in the weekend...RC knocked us out of the championships and the MS team ended the weekend 3 & 2 and had a great time.

BYU HALLOWEEN CLASSIC 2011...ALL 3 HS TEAMS WENT UNDEFEATED!!: Our 3 HS Teams went UNDEFEATED in the BYU Halloween Classic with our HS Juniors and Seniors (with a couple of Sophomores thrown in for good measure) team taking on the BYU Recruit team (BUY prospective players from all over the country) and beating them 12 to 6!! Great job ALL of our HS boys and fantastic job to our 4 HS coaches, Coach Mannix, Coach Jeff, Coach Manning and Coach Walton. Halfway through the day we all watched BYU take on the UofU in a scrimmage...what is notable is the number of past Utah Starz players on the two college teams! Below is our Freshmen and Sophomore teams at the end of the tournament.

CHAMPIONSHIP WIN!!!   AT THE JOLLY ROGER TOURNAMENT:

Utah Starz HS.... Champions in the Jolly Roger tourney!! 14 to 7 Victory.... Welcome to the Starz Coach Jeff!

Utah Starz HS Players honored for their "class"! One of the teams at the tournament was down 12 to 0 at the half to the Starz...they were simply outmatched. We had to play them again later in the day but we all knew it would be no fun for anyone based on the skill difference in our two teams. After our first game however...Coach Jeff and the Starz players offered to completely mix both the Starz team and our opponents team in our final game that day...make it fun...they agreed and so both teams threw all their sticks in the middle and chose two totally mixed teams. The game was a blast...everyone had a great time, the other team got to hold their heads up high and mix in with an incredible group of players...and it all ended with a 5 to 5 tie...with EVERYONE on their feet...the winning team took it with an exciting Braveheart! The camaraderie after the game was fantastic...AND...several parents came up after the game and personally told me and several others that what we had done for their players was one of the classiest things they had ever seen on a Lacrosse field and thanked us for doing it. THIS is what makes a Starz player...it's what's inside you! You go boys...we and many others are very proud of you!

Utah Starz U13/U15 ... we combined ten of our U13's and ten of our U15's to field a team and play in the Jolly Roger U15 Tourney...the first two games were incredible as our boys showed the all U15 competition that even though we had some 10 year olds on our team...we came to win! And win they did. Fantastic day boys... 2 and 1 is fantastic! (Note from coach taylor): Thanks to the boys--they pushed thru extreme heat and played well together after only 3 practices. I am very proud of the effort guys--thanks for giving me your best!!!

UTAH STARZ U13 & U15: U13 led by Coach Gary Albert went undefeated in 3 tournaments this year and only lost 1 game in the third, letting you know just how strong our coaching and U13 program are. Our U15 teams did fantastic...our U15 Elite teams did well this year with Coach Brad Taylor taking his team into the playoffs in Seattle (one of the toughest tournaments we attend)...and taking us all the way to the playoffs in Sin City. This year you can expect some major changes in our training program based on feedback from this last year and requests for more...we are introducing our Starz Pro Lax Trainings which will focus on development of IQ, Offense, Defense, etc., and will have guest coaches like Denver Outlaws Ken Clausen. Want to be the best...be a Starz player.

UTAH STARZ RIP IT UP AT ADRENALINE HS ELITE TOURNAMENT AND MAKE THE PLAYOFFS:

Very proud of our Starz boys! It was a dog fight in Sonoma! Our boys held their own and held their heads high as we took on some of the best teams in the country. We have a young team (average age was 15.5...while the competition average 17.5) of rising sophomores and Juniors with only 4 rising seniors on the team...while many teams such as Brady Bunch had roughly 10 graduated seniors. This event is a U19 Elite event...so we came to see what we could do against the big dogs and showed them what Utah is made of! Even the games we lost the scores were very close.

There were 26 teams at the event and we made it all the way to the playoffs in the B bracket (there were 8 Teams in the A bracket and 8 Teams in the B bracket with 10 teams in the consolation games). We had a big win over Lax Dogs Elite in the semi's but OC Kings knocked us out with a 4 to 1 victory in the playoffs. NOTE: Utah Starz only allowed 5 total goals in the final two games...that's how closely matched we were! Great job boys, and special kudos to Goalie Eric Gronseth who played some of the best ball I have ever seen...he was even written about in Lacrosse Magazine for his goaltending in the Zip-It game, and some of our players were shown and written about in Inside Lacrosse and West Side Lax magazines.

UTAH STARZ INVITED TO THE PRESTIGIOUS "DICK'S SPORTING GOODS TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS" IN FLORIDA:

Yes it's true...our A Bracket 3rd place victory at the Warrior Vail Shootout was not only noticed...it has made the Utah Starz, and the Utah Starz players the talk of MANY organizations, events, and teams! What has been mentioned over and over, and was brought up to the Starz as they offered us the invite to the Tournament of Champions, was how great our players are and especially our win over the Colorado Wild. In fact, the coach of the Wild and MLL Star Goalie...was at the Virginia camp here in Utah recently, recognized some of our Utah Starz players who were at the camp, and specifically brought up the game and how good we were. The representative from the Tournament of Champions said: "You guys deserve to be at the Tournament of Champions."

The Utah Starz and our incredible players and Coaches are being recognized nationwide as a force to be reckoned with, and now we are being invited to major events in the East! So ask yourself...why would you play anywhere else? Go with a known winner that can get you where you want to be in your career. Go with the Utah Starz.

The Utah Starz has helped more players get recognized, recruited to play on other incredible competitive teams and invited to prestigious recruiting events such as the Adrenaline Showcase (the only Utah players to be invited were Utah Starz players) than ANY other team or organization in Utah. The Utah Starz has been around 14 years, we have built a reputation and are known and respected throughout the country...and we can back up our reputation with incredible success stories, hard fought victories, incredible coaching and players who have been recruited to play on other teams to further enhance their careers...they don't recruit unless they know where to get the best! Being a Utah Starz player and coach is an honor...and we thank all of our loyal players, coaches and fans as we continue to strive as an organization to make you all proud.

The Utah Starz next major event is Sonoma (one of the biggest recruiting events on the West Coast, and from reports...it is now being recognized as a major recruiting event in the Nation). And...we've already been getting the calls from Adrenaline and other teams making sure we are going to be there...our reputation as an incredibly tough opponent is out there, and our competition wants a challenge. With the Utah Starz...they know they will get one!

You want to be the best, have a chance at being recognized, learn to play as a team, play with the best, have a blast, learn from winning caches who have won in many tournaments, have a shot at bigger and better opportunities, did I mention have a blast! Then ask about becoming a Utah Starz player today.

VAIL WARRIOR SHOOTOUT:

Utah Starz U17...3rd Place A Division...it was an unbeleavable and exciting finish and we are all so proud of how these young men came together and beat some of the best teams in the country, and ended with an incredible 3rd in the A division...first Utah Team in this tournament to be in the A division and almost take home the big prize!

Utah Starz U15...5th place B Division...the boys got off to a rough start and just couldn't find the net in the first day...but Day 2 brought about a change and the team started to GEL...they tied their 3rd game on day two and won the last game. Going into Day 3...they were unstoppable!! They won 3 and lost their 4th by 1 point in a quadruple overtime (talk about exciting!) on day 4 they kept the drive alive and finished with a big win to end the tournament in 5th in the B division and played an incredible 12 games in 4 days!!

VAIL WARRIOR SHOOTOUT: Utah Starz U17...5 and 1 (only lost by 1 point) going into the playoffs on day 3...Utah Starz is ranked 4th in the A bracket!! Go Starz! 2 more days to go!

Congratulations to the Alta Juniors Coach and our very own Utah Starz Head Coach Stephen Dunn...he brought home his 4th Utah State Juniors Lacrosse Championship in a 10 to 2 victory over Brighton. Coach Dunn told me: "I am so proud of all the players on both teams...it was almost like one of our Utah Starz scrimmages there were so many of our Utah Starz players on both these teams. It was incredible!".

CONGRATULATIONS UTAH STARZ PLAYERS...THE "ONLY" LACROSSE PLAYERS IN UTAH...TO BE INVITED TO THE ELITE ADRENALINE SHOWCASE!  Unlike other regional or state recruiting events, the Adrenaline Showcase features only the top 150 recommended players from the entire western United States.  By having players from a number of states and Canada, the Showcase is recognized as the best collection of talent in the West.  Throughout the two day program, NCAA Division I college coaches will be on hand to coach and work directly with the participants with quality clinics and college-style practices. Realizing that not every player seeks a match with a Division I program, Adrenaline has multiple NCAA Division II, III and MCLA recruiters on hand so that each participant has a potential collegiate fit. BEING A UTAH STARZ PLAYER, IS WHAT GIVES YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN THE NEXT SHOWCASE.

WOO HOO: It's time to start up again after our yearly freeze during the HS and MS lacrosse seasons...look for updates soon, as soon as the MS season ends!

UTAH STARZ U13 GOES UNDEFEATED IN SAN DIEGO CHALLENGE ...Woo Hoo...Go Starz!!

12 UTAH STARZ PLAYERS ARE SELECTED FOR THE ADRENALINE SHOWCASE: Congratulations to 12 of our Utah Starz players…After gathering evaluations and recommendations from NCAA coaches and Adrenaline Lacrosse’s experienced evaluation committee who attended all the Adrenaline events…12 Utah Starz players (and the only players selected from the State of Utah) are amongst  the top 215 players (All grade levels) selected from over 4500 players evaluated in the West (13 states and Canada) to participate in the Adrenaline Showcase. Congratulations to: Chris Severson, Kyle Baldassari, Carson Dutkanych, Ashton Schmidt, Justin Anthony, Mason Barnhill, Carter Mannix, Matt Jungeman, Aaron Fieldsted, Nick Grogg, Ben Richards, Jace Thomas…We are extremely proud of all you boys!

From the Adrenaline Showcase we will have another 10 to 15 Utah Starz players join these players and will attend the Adrenaline Challenge Elite…along with another 20 Utah Starz players at the Adrenaline Challenge HS event.  All of these players will be looked at and evaluated by college coaches and recruiters.

U15 GOES UNDEFEATED INTO THE CHAMPIONSHIP, U13 GOES 4 and 1 AT BEST OF THE WEST LAS VEGAS: The Utah Starz took 4...that's right...4 MS teams (2 A's and 2 B's) to the Best of the West this year, and almost took the championship in MS Division 1A. We did have to make a formal complaint in the Division 2 category...rules state that teams are to be 7th graders and below...two teams we went up against had 9th graders??? OK...to say it was a mismatch would be an understatement. Putting that aside...all the teams had a blast and played their hearts out. Coach Taylor's team fought some incredible battles with equal competition to themselves, they kept the games close, and the whole team learned a couple valuable lessons. Coach Albert's team...what can I say...they were incredible. They ended the weekend 4 and 1...and didn't make the playoffs because of points. Disappointing, but players have to realize in competitive play, even one loss or not getting enough points can throw you out of the seeding. The lesson here is...Play All Out All The Time, there are no second chances. Coach Dunn led two of our teams, the Blue Team which had two completely mismatched games where our 6th and 7th graders went up against 9th graders...but...they played like warriors and did not give up and fought till the final whistle! I cannot tell you all how proud I am of you boys. Redemption came on Sunday when they won their final game and went home on a high!! Our D1 A group was was also led by Coach Dunn, and they were simply incredible. They easily beat the Canadians, and had a close call against a great Vegas team...but went into Sunday undefeated. Sunday opened with a game against Washington's Mercer Island, which was a battle but we won 8 to 2...then into the Championship game against OC Kings, which was watched by Kyle Harrison and Max and Zander Ritz. This was the same team we lost to in San Diego just a few short months ago...and history repeated itself...we fought a great battle, but OC was just too powerful. All in all...great tournament, excellent play...lots of fun...and we came home with a second place trophy and a lot of great memories. Way to go Starz...we are all incredibly proud of you!

UTAH STARZ GO UNDEFEATED IN SAN DIEGO CHALLENGE: Two of our Utah Starz Youth and MS teams went to the San Diego Challenge and TORE IT UP!!! Our Starz U13 team with Coach Albert went undefeated in some of the toughest games we have seen at this tournament. In years past this tournament has always been a pretty good challenge...but this year some of the best teams in the West and Canada came not just to compete...but to win! Our Utah Starz U13 Warriors were undaunted...and gave as good as they got and went undefeated to take the championship!. Our U15 team had many newer Utah Starz players, some who were attending their first tournament. They did very well, and had what we have come to know in the Starz organization as "an eye opening experience"...it's that moment when as a player you realize you are on the field with some of the hardest competition in the west, and win or lose...you are able to hold your own and add some to the win column! Congratulations and be proud of all your accomplishments boys...you are utah Starz!!

UTAH STARZ CRUSH IT AT THE SAN DIEGO ADRENALINE CHALLENGE: 3 Utah Starz teams (HS Elite, HS, MS) hit the Adrenaline Challenge in San Diego this past weekend and absolutely made a HUGE showing and people took notice! Our MS team went 3 and 0 to seed them 3rd overall in the finals...beating RC and some of the hardest teams out there. Our HS team opened with a huge beat down of the HS RC team, taking no prisoners and leaving carnage across the battle field, ending the day 3 and 0. And Our HS Elite team went 2 and 1, beating the LA lazers so decisevely in the third game of the day, their coaches and parents went absolutely nuts! Their players comments after the game (This was the team that crushed the team that beat us in our second game that day) were; "we thought you guys would be an easy win", "we can't believe you guys were that good". All in all...our teams' won 8 out of 9 games the first day and were seeded MS 3rd, HS 4th, and Elite was 14th out of 32. For those wondering if our teams were actually noticed and watched by recruiters...after the game where we crushed the Lazers, a college coach called one of our players over...by name...and started interviewing him. he asked upwards of 30 questions, asked why the Goalie had beaten him to the end line in the last part of the second half (letting the player know he had been watching him)...liked the truthful answer from the player and then said something that has had that player walking on a cloud for days. he said: "I want you at my college and on my team." We had a second player approached on the field, again called by name, and interviewed. We also had recruiters filming our HS and MS players! AND...our players had a BLAST .

What can be better...playing some of the hardest teams from across the country and Canada, beating most of them, having a great time, making new friends, be watched by recruiters and other teams, and being part of the Utah Starz family. We have our challenges every now and then like all large organizations going through growing pains...but all in all, we simply have a better program and opportunity. No one practices all winter, no one goes to as many tournaments giving the players the opportunity to stretch their skills, and no body cares for you as much as the Utah Starz do...Guys...this is real...this is the opportunity the UTAH STARZ can bring...this is what playing for the UTAH STARZ is all about.

CONGRATULATIONS TO 4 UTAH STARZ PLAYERS: We have 4 Utah Starz players that have been recruited and have signed their "committment letters"!!  Stephen Dunn and Zach Bullet (shown in picture below) signed in front of reporters with Mesa State. Griffen Pierkel signed with Mesa State, and Trent Herbert signed with Seton Hill.

UTAH STARZ CRUSH THE SIN CITY TOURNAMENT: 4 Utah Starz teams (HS, MS, MS, Youth) headed to sunny las Vegas to compete in the Adrenaline Sin City Challange. We had a mix of incredibly exciting games, a goal called back that kept us from the championship, one of the MS teams went 5 and 0 into the championship and fought a great battle ending in second, and one of our teams played some pretty exciting games and had what we like to call a learning experience. We came home with a 2nd place and two 3rd place finishes, and from what I heard...all had a great time. More details and pictures to follow...stay tuned!

UTAH STARZ ROCK THE SPACENEEDLE SHOOTOUT IN SEATTLE WASHINGTON: 3 Utah Starz teams headed to Seattle to brave the cold but more importantly to brave the Canadians! Canadian teams are by far some of the best competition anywhere...and they are TOUGH! our HS team was headed to the playoffs with a record of 2 and 1 hit a snag with a 5-way tie to fill 4 playoff slots...we had fewer goals scored (this is how they decide rankings in most tournaments) and didnt get a slot in the playoffs. Not really fair, but what can you do. The HS team had some incredibly exciting games and beat the Canadians!! They ended up 2 and 2. MS, by luck of the draw, or unluck of the draw...pulled the toughest roster and had a battle on their hands...all Canadians (that may or may not have driven themselves there...LOL). The MS victory was against a "same age" US team (wink, wink), and ended the weekend 1 and 3, and a lot more mature after facing incredible competition. The Utah Starz U11/U13 boys were the Cinderella story...they DOMINATED the Canadians beating each team by an average 10 points and went into the final leg of the playoffs 4 and 0! They fought a great battle but a dang canadaian team "Ridgemeadow" got an early lead, then an injury took 7 minutes off the clock...final was RM 6 Utah Starz 3...but what a great game it was!

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE EVENING OF COLLEGE RECRUITING AND LACROSSE INSTRUCTION! MASON GOODHAND, HEAD COACH OF WESTMINSTER COLLEGE LACROSSE, BROUGHT HIS SHINING STARS OF HIS WESTMINSTER LACROSSE TEAM:

And what an absolute success it was! Mason Goodhand brought 6 of his super star athletes including team captain Jeff Etcheverry, and held multiple college style clinics and drills for over 50 of our Utah Starz HS players. The night culminated with a fast paced scrimmage with quick running lines where even the College players joined in...all under the watchful, and "recruiting" eye of Mason Goodhand!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR UTAH STARZ HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS CONSIDERING PLAYING COLLEGE LACROSSE: Mason Goodhand, present Head Coach of Westminster College Lacrosse and former Head Coach of The University of Utah College Lacrosse will be at the Utah Starz Monday night 11/15/2010 practice with his coaching crew and present college players to review Utah Starz players who are on his watch list, look for new talent, and to help run practice (college style). This is for Utah Starz HS players only, and is the first of many of these planned special events for Utah Starz players.

PARK CITY SHOOTOUT: Thursday Night action: Amazing U13 VICTORY over Idaho 10 to 2 (we had em from the first whistle and fought like wild dogs the whole game). U15 Navy VICTORY over Arizona (Incredible finish with a Braveheart AWESOME Goalie stop then scoop and run full length of the field to go Goalie on Goalie!! Woot Woot)! And our U15 Gold VICTORY over Idaho (Talk about a tough game...it was a dogfight for the first half...then the Gold team went on the hunt and crushed them in an exciting and very tough played game ).

2011 UTAH STATE JUNIORS LACROSSE CHAMPIONSHIP: Utah Lacrosse has come a long way in the past few years thanks in large part to the competitive teams like the Utah Starz (Team Utah) taking our youth to many different states and learning to play the old fashioned way... with strength, honor, grit, and the occasional thumping by a much superior team. To be competitive in Utah lacrosse, you need to be on a comp team.

To put this into further perspective...it is NO SURPRISE that the two teams that competed for the 2011 Juniors State Championship...out of the 37 players from both Brighton and Alta...23 were Utah Starz players. Not other comp team players...UTAH STARZ PLAYERS!

So...if you want to increase your skills, play better lacrosse, travel, and compete on a level above the rest...become a Utah Starz player.

PARK CITY SHOOTOUT: Final: Talk about Utah Starz STRENGTH....U13 UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONS!!!! U15 Gold UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONS...U15 Navy 3 and 2 GREAT Job all of you boys!

Long time Utah Starz coach Dan Mannix has led the Utah Starz to many playoff wins, into championships, and earned the invite to the coveted Dick's Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions. Coach Mannix's teaching of set offences and defenses and lacrosse IQ, along with his approachable and mentoring coaching style, mixed with his sincere belief in his players has brought the respect of his players, parents and his opponents, and we are proud to have him as our new head coach. Coach Stephen Dunn, after many years with the Starz and our former head coach and President, has chosen to take a break from lacrosse to pursue work and other interests and will be missed. With Coach Mannix moving to HS, Coach Taylor moves to U15, and Coach Albert takes over U13. Thank you all and Congratulations Coach Mannix!
